Dinner and Discuss

Welcome! Dinner and Discuss is a ministry of St Mark's which aims to stimulate discussion and action on a topic relevant to contemporary issues in faith and life. We hold events at St Mark's Church where a group of us can have dinner and discuss a topic for the evening, often with an invited speaker to start us off. Anyone can come along (do bring your friends!).

Summary

Aim: To create a friendly and encouraging environment where critical discussion can take place around the questions people have relating to God, the Church and their own experience of life.

What: There is dinner from 7.30pm, followed by a short address. Then we break up into smaller groups and chat about the topic. The evening closes at 9.30pm following the group coming back together and feeding back their questions and conclusions, and a short summary/conclusion from the chair.

Where: Wilberforce Room (top floor of Durie Hall).

When: Once every couple of months.

Who: About 20-30 people usually come to the evenings.

How: Many of the topics examined are enormous, and so to help discussion (and digestion) they will be framed as a simple contradiction that begs a resolution.

Cost: About £2 for dinner, nothing to discuss. However, please rsvp to if you plan to come.

Next Dinner & Discuss: Monday 16 November

Social action and/or social justice... What are they? Why do they matter? Do they work?

How can we make a difference in our communities? What role for the church? What role for the 'citizen'? What role for government? What role for those working in government or in public service? Does charity work?

For this special Dinner and Discuss on how to make a difference we are joined by three very special speakers and panellists:

  • Faithworks Team Director Nancy Doyle has many years of experience of managing charity projects;
  • Jonathan Cox has experience of working for an MP, lobbying Parliament and is currently working on a national campaign for the ground breaking social change coalition the 'citizens organising foundation'; and
  • Our very own Dan Burrows is St Mark's Community Ministries Co-ordinator. One of Dan's main roles is heading up the CAP debt counselling service based in St Mark's.

Come along with a desire for pizza and some difficult questions and we can promise that you will go away inspired about how we can all make a difference.
